Music Box
Music Box 2013
Music Box is an absurd mechanical contraption that creates frenetic musical noise in joyful response to the surreal, carnival-like atmosphere of Nuit Blanche in Toronto. The initial inspiration came from the mad cacophony made by numerous marching bands as they gathered for the Santa-Claus Parade. Using simple mechanical interventions, sounds are coerced from an array of real instruments, powered by motors. On a parked flatbed trailer, the mechanism rides on a trolley that periodically disappears into a large box, the door slamming shut behind. Reminiscent of a cuckoo clock, Music Box creates child-like anticipation as one awaits its reappearance.
